Kaman Post and Bridge, a scenic spot in Jammu and Kashmir, is now open to civilians and tourists after the army relaxed its restrictions. Visit this historic site and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Kashmir is a land of stunning natural beauty, diverse cultural heritage and strategic geographic significance. It attracts millions of visitors every year who come to witness its majestic mountains, verdant valleys and sacred sites. In 2022, the state recorded a remarkable 1.88 crore tourist arrivals, and by August 2023, the number had already reached 1.27 crore, with projections of surpassing 2.25 crore by the end of the year. This winter, however, Jammu and Kashmir offers a unique opportunity for adventurous travelers to explore some of the regions along the Line of Control in North Kashmir, which were previously off-limits to civilians. From the picturesque Gurez valley to the serene Bangus meadow, here are some of the hidden gems you can now discover.

Keran: Keran is a scenic valley along the Line of Control, where the Kishenganga River flows through green meadows. It is a paradise for nature lovers, who can enjoy the dense forests and rich wildlife of this border area in Kupwara district, which is only 85 km away from Srinagar. Keran also has a historical connection to the ancient Sharada Peeth temple and university, which lies 41 km across the border in the Neelum Valley of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. This sacred site, which flourished between the 6th and 12th centuries CE, is a dream destination for Kashmiri Pandits who wish to visit their ancestral heritage.

Gurez: Gurez is a hidden gem in the Himalayas, where the Kishanganga River runs between snow-capped mountains and pine forests. To reach this secluded valley, travellers have to pass through several army checkpoints and show their Aadhar cards for verification. They also have to cross the Razdan Pass, which is 11,672 feet high, before descending into the mysterious Gurez Valley. Most travellers stay in Dawar, which is a 4-hour drive from Srinagar. The proximity to the Pakistan border adds an element of adventure to this remote destination.

Kaman Post: This is the final destination before entering the territory under Pakistan's administration. Kaman Post or Peace Bridge (Aman Setu) symbolizes the geographic and political split. The site, located at the end of Baramulla district, opened to visitors in July. You only need to get permission from the local Army and Police to see the landmark.

Machil: Surrounded by hills and pine forests, Machil Valley lies in the District of Kupwara (58 kilometres from the town), on the northern border of the Kashmir Valley. The Machil River runs through it, creating a scenic view. You can reach it by going through the north of the Lolab Valley, and Zamindar Gali. There, you can enjoy camping and hiking in an offbeat location, and discover the local community and culture.
