Train traffic resumes on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route after Narmada flood. Western Railway says trains are running slowly with caution as water level recedes. Several trains cancelled due to heavy rain in Gujarat on Sunday.

After being disrupted for nearly 12 hours due to the high water level of the Narmada river, train movement on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route gradually resumed from Monday afternoon. Western Railway's Chief PRO Sumit Thakur informed PTI that the trains started operating on the route from bridge no 502 at around 11:30 am on Monday as the Narmada river's water level went down below the danger mark between Bharuch and Ankleshwar stations in Gujarat.

The Narmada River bridge, which connects Bharuch and Ankleshwar stations on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route under the Vadodara division, was closed for railway traffic late on Sunday night as the river water level rose above the danger mark at brigade no. 502. The bridge was reopened on Monday morning after the water level receded, according to Western Railway (WR) chief public relations officer Sumit Thakur.

"Trains are now running slowly and cautiously over the Narmada River bridge," Thakur said. He added that WR had set up helpline numbers and informed passengers about the status of trains through a public announcement system.

Due to the flood, all the passenger and freight trains on both sides of the river were halted since Sunday night. Thakur said WR had made arrangements to provide refreshments, tea, and water to the passengers who were stuck in the trains.

The flood also led to the cancellation of at least 18 trains, including Mumbai-Ahmedabad Tejas Express and Shatabdi Express, a WR release said.

Several parts of Gujarat witnessed heavy rainfall on Sunday, causing floods in low-lying areas and isolating many villages as Narmada and other rivers overflowed, officials said.
